About UCAN...

UCAN (United Communities Assistance Network)

is a 501(c)(3) not-for profit youth, family & community empowerment organization

in Shallotte, Brunswick County, NC

.

April 2003, Board of Directors whose members include an all-women board of directors; consist of community residents and representatives of local businesses and community-based organizations launched a nonprofit youth and family organization named United Communities’ Assistance Network (UCAN!).

Past Programming

UCAN has partnered with Brunswick County Schools, Communities In Schools in providing enrichment activities during their 21st Century Afterschool Program. UCAN provided those activities at Supply Elementary, Shallotte Middle, Bolivia Elementary, and Leland Elementary & Middle Schools. Not just schools, UCAN collaboratively worked with area churches to provide family trips, parenting classes and summer camps to youth from or near their communities. UCAN in partnership with Marie Holmes Foundation hosts summer camps, youth back-to-school conferences/Carowinds trip; to give youth a great start at beginning and throughout their school year, and a community trip for minority families to Baltimore/Washington, DC to tour/visit the National African American Museum. From day one unity and experiential learning with "hands-on" experiences has been an integral part of UCAN’s ideal of empowerment and support. That's some of what we've done. . .

We’re not done yet. . .

Future Programming

UCAN is committed to continue to offer some of the previous programming like UCAN KIDS Camp but offer new programs, such asdeliver resources, opportunities, and incentives (ROI) that provides a proprietary process for creating socio-economic advancement among minorities, women of color, their families, and communities. Our vision is to achieve socio-economic advancement among minority groups, not just income but also educational fulfillment, financial security, and a vast array of outcomes across the lifespan including physical and psychological health.

Project LAUNCH (Launch Aspiration to Undergo Noble Change and Hope)

was created to provide resources that will advance socio-economics to minorities; particularly women; their families and communities. Socioeconomic status (SES) encompasses not just income but also educational attainment, financial security, and subjective perceptions of social status and social class. Socioeconomic status can encompass quality of life attributes as well as the opportunities and privileges afforded to people within society. This project will provide 1-Capacity-building; board development and training, 2- Programming for Minority Entrepreneurs (Black Elite & Young Black Elite Clubs) 3-Community Forums for minority communities addressing Economics, Education, Entrepreneurship, Health and Wellness, and Justice.

(More information to come about Project LAUNCH 2020! July 2020)

Also, increasing exploration is high on our list to provide youth promising opportunities like visiting colleges, museums, and other historic, educational and recreational facilities.
